Apart from The Jewel of Seven Stars the only other mummy story in Return from the Dead that I hadn’t previously read was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Ring of Thoth. It’s one of two Conan Doyle stories included in the anthology, the other being the excellent Lot No. 249.

The Ring of Thoth was the main inspiration for the original 1932 Universal movie The Mummy, and like the movie it’s a kind of supernatural love story rather than a conventional tale of horror. There is a certain degree of creepiness though, and plenty of atmosphere. An Egyptologist is accidentally locked overnight in a museum in Paris, among the Egyptian relics. He has a strange encounter with an attendant who speaks perfect French but looks very Egyptian, and is told an even stranger tale of a love that has endured for millennia.

Conan Doyle was a highly original and very underrated writer of horror stories and this one is very good indeed.

The Return from the Dead anthology overall is one that I highly recommend.
