I’ve had very mixed feelings about the books and stories of I’ve that I’ve read. I decided to give him another go after finding a story of his in an anthology that I’ve been slowly making my way through.
The story is The Valley of Lost Children. It’s a ghost story of sorts although it involves the living visiting the land of the dead rather than the dead visiting the land of the living. A poor farmer and his wife lose their four-year-old son to an infection. When they’re burying him an odd stranger tells them about the Valley of Lost Children where children go after death, and the wife becomes obsessed by the idea. It’s an interesting and original idea although it’s also lacking a little in atmosphere. But worth a read if you can find it.
