Probably over a decade and a half ago, I read a short story that was old then about a magician who set about manipulating spirits in a room with no angels. One of the premises of the story was that angles in some way allowed the evil spirits to retain their power, so he had plastered all of the corners of the room, rounding out the angles. I seem to remember that the story ended unhappily, when the plaster cracked.

Does anyone know what story I'm talking about? I had thought it was by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but I haven't been able to find it in the book I kept from those years. I'd like to track down the story, if this plotline sounds familiar to anyone.
