As there seem to be a lot of quizzes floating about LJ at the moment, I thought I'd contribute one of my own! Go on, take my test! The winner will receive a suitably themed post card, and you have nothing to lose but your dignity! I mislaid mine years ago and have somehow managed to survive, after all. Apologies for the length of the post. It just seemed a bit silly to lj-cut a quiz. I will post the results in a few days' time.

  • 0-10 points: Hard luck old chap! I recommend reading lots more scary stories by the genre's great authors. The Oxford Book Of English Ghost Stories is an excellent place to start.

  • 10-20 points: Not bad at all! You clearly know your way around a ghostly tale, though you may not know the fine details of some stories.

  • 20-30 points: Congratulations! You are a proper supernatural fiction buff!!

  • 1) Which horror story is this passage taken from? Which author? 1 point for each question.

"On a shelf of smooth stone overhanging a deep pool in the hollow of an oak coppice a boy of about sixteen lay asprawl, drying his wet brown limbs luxuriously in the sun. His wet hair, parted by a recent dive, lay close to his head, and his light-brown eyes, so light that there was an almost tigerish gleam in them, were turned towards Van Cheele with a certain lazy watchfulness. It was an unexpected apparition, and Van Cheele found himself engaged in the novel process of thinking before he spoke."

"It stood for the moment in a band of dark shadow, and he had not seen what its face was like. Now it began to move, in a stooping posture, and all at once the spectator realized, with some horror and some relief, that it must be blind, for it seemed to feel about it with its muffled arms in a groping and random fashion. Turning half away from him, it became suddenly conscious of the bed he had just left, and darted towards it, and bent over and felt the pillows in a way which made Parkins shudder as he had never in his life thought it possible. In a very few moments it seemed to know that the bed was empty, and then, moving forward into the area of light and facing the window, it showed for the first time what manner of thing it was. Parkins, who very much dislikes being questioned about it, did once describe something of it in my hearing, and I gathered that what he chiefly remembers about it is a horrible, an intensely horrible, face of ------- "
