A story that really impressed me recently was Davis Grubb's "The Horsehair Trunk". Davis Grubb is perhaps best known as the author of "The Night of the Hunter", which in 1955 was turned into an absolutely superb film by Charles Laughton. I found "The Horsehair Trunk" in a Rod Serling-edited anthology based on his 1970s TV show "Night Gallery". The anthology is called "The Night Gallery Reader". And it's a great little story with a wonderful little sting in the tail! I keep hoping I'll come across more of this author's work, but so far I haven't.
