Peter Haining in The Vampire Omnibus claims The Grave of Ethelind Fionguala by Julian Hawthorne, published in 1887, as the first American vampire tale, or at least the first to be written by an American (it’s actually set in Ireland). It’s actually quite a good little story, a kind of hybrid of the ghost story and the vampire story, and quite effectively atmospheric. Julian Hawthorne was in fact the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne. Has anyone read this story? Is it really the first vampire story by an American author? And what was the first vampire story to have an American setting?
