One of the interesting things about 19th century horror is the number of what we would today call mainstream writers who wrote ghost stories or gothic stories. Dickens and Thackeray are obvious examples. Thomas Hardy is another, and his Barbara of the House of Grebe is an absolutely superb gothic tale. It involves a statue, and a jealous husband, but I won’t tell you any more.
