I’ve just been reading the introduction to The Oxford Book of Gothic Tales (a used copy of which I bought yesterday for two dollars). Speaking of Poe, the introduction (by Chris Baldick) states, “Poe ensured that whereas before him the keynote of Gothic fiction had been cruelty, after him it would be decadence.” I thought it might be a quote that would stimulate some discussion.
