In a Glass Darkly includes two of Sheridan le Fanu’s novellas and three short stories. The novellas include his sensual and darkly erotic vampire tale, Carmilla, and the short stories include Green Tea, one of the greatest of all ghostly tales. While the other tales aren’t quite as good as these, they are very good indeed. The Familiar is a story of a man haunted by an episode in his past, but is he merely haunted by he memory or is it an actual ghost from the past? Mr Justice Harbottle is about a judge who finally, much to his cost, gets a taste of real justice. In a Glass Darkly is an absolutely essential item on the bookshelf of anyone with even a passing interest in the gothic.
