Ambrose Bierce (1942-1914) is perhaps best known as a humorist, but he also wrote some wonderful weird fiction. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge includes six of his weird tales. The best of his stories, such as Beyond the Wall and An Adventure at Brownville rely almost entirely on suggestion. We think something strange has happened, but we can’t be sure. We can’t be sure that anything at all has happened. But we have the uneasy feeling that it might have happened. A very fine writer.
