Name?:
Al

Where you live?:
Toukley, a horrible little place just over 100 kilometres north of Sydney, Australia.

What you do with yourself?:
As little as possible.

Favourite horror or ghost story author, and why?:
Kathe Koja. For her gloriously poetic writing style, her edginess, her interest in outcasts and those who take life to extremes.

Favourite horror-film and director?:
Favourite horror film is Roman Polanski’s “Repulsion”. A brilliant exploration of madness.

How did you get into horror/the supernatural?:
I only started getting into horror fairly recently, in fact less than a decade ago. I started with Anne Rice, but quickly abandoned her.

Ever had any strange, inexplicable and/or scary experiences of your own?:
None at all.

Have your say! What do you think about the community? How could it be improved?
I’ve only just got here, but it looks good so far.

I think my absolute favourite horror short story is "The Summer People" by Shirley Jackson. I'm a big fan of Shirley Jackson's work anyway, but this particular story is I think the ultimate in subtle, understated horror.

On the subject of M. R. James, what modern writers do people feel are in the same tradition of writing as James? Are there any? I'd be inclined to say Robert Aickman, but since he's been dead for more than 20 years I'm not sure he qualifies as modern! Traditional ghost stories seem to ne out of fashion. One modern ghost story that I did think was extremely good was Tanith Lee's "Yellow and Red".
