Since reading Nalo Hopkinson’s Brown Girl in the Ring I’ve wanted to read more of her work. Reading her story Slow Cold Chick, included in the Northern Frights 5 anthology I bought recently has made me even more anxious to read more of her stories. It starts out as a seemingly bizarre story but as you read on it starts to make sense. Hopkinson (who was born in Jamaica but lives in Canada) is very concerned with the way those without power use language and other forms of self-expression to try to take back that power, a concern that comes through in this story. A very good story.
