I’ve been renewing my acquaintance with with Joseph Sheridan le Fanu, reading some of his ghost stories. I love his stories, and I think “A Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter”, “Carmilla” and “Green Tea” are among the greatest of all horror short stories. The stories I’ve been reading today have been from the collection “Madam Crowl’s Ghost and other stories”, edited by M. R. James (a great admirer of le Fanu’s work), except for “Narrative of a Ghost of a Hand” which was in an anthology of Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories. That one is a nicely understated little story, and it’s the one I’ve enjoyed most.
