I’ve always had the feeling that my ideas on what constitutes effective horror are rather different from most people’s. I’ve just been reading Freud’s famous 1919 essay on “The Uncanny” (“Das Unheimliche”), trying to get a handle on just what it is that attracts me about horror. I know it isn’t gore. I know it isn’t fear, as such. Not as in fear of imminent death or bodily harm.
