A first-rate Gothic website
Mar. 27th, 2007 02:03 amFans of good quality literary criticism might enjoy the online Irish Journal Of Gothic And Horror Studies, a recent and growing repository of reviews and articles on film, TV and literature. Unlike many online periodicals, the entire journal is made available online, instead of just parts of it. There is a good blend of content, from the scholarly pieces involving 'menstrual pathologies' in Dracula and the hermeneutics of Maturin to lighter (but still thought-provoking) reviews of cult telly and computer games. And don't forget to check out the 'Lost Souls' section, where renowned authors and critics point the spotlight on their favourite obscure writers and actors (including Ramsey Campbell on our community favourite Fritz Leiber, and a fascinating, scandalous Tom Weaver account of the tragic life of horror queen Susan Cabot, AKA the Wasp Woman.)
I was especially chuffed with the article on the gothic-in-disguise TV series Goldplated, both for giving the programme the credit it deserves and for pouring an entire lake of scorn onto two of my most hated items of pop culture: the dire ghost-hunting jockfest series Supernatural and the nation-sweeping moronorama that is Harry Potter. I'll confess to not having ploughed my way through all the essays on Derridean traces yet, but maybe when I've had a coffee...
