The best horror or gothic novels I read this year. I’m defining horror very broadly indeed here. And I’m including stuff that is gothic without being horror.
Arthur Machen, The Hill of Dreams weird, decadent and gothic
Fritz Leiber, Our Lady of Darkness - some deeply weird but intriguing ideas
Richard Marsh, The Beetle - a strange gothic mystery from the 1890s
Octave Mirbeau, The Torture Garden - a man becomes involved with an Englishwoman who is fascinated by watching prisoners being tortured
