I’ve been reading Fritz Leiber’s Swords Against Death. While most of the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stories are word & sorcery or dark fantasy, some are definitely horror. Including the story that has most impressed me so far, The Howling Tower. A very creepy atmosphere, and the idea behind it, of a man haunted by the ghosts of dogs who must find victims to assuage their hunger for souls or be driven mad by their other-worldly howling, is brilliant. A great story.
