Some Algernon Blackwood stories I’ve been reading:
A Haunted Island - interesting because of the setting, a remote island in a lake in the Canadian wilderness, and because it involves Native American ghosts. And it’s very atmospheric story. A good story.
A Case of Eavesdropping - a man staying in a hotel hears voices from the empty room next to his. A routine ghost story, of very little interest.
Keeping His Promise - a genuinely eerie and creepy story, involving a promise made by two boys to each other. An excellent story.
Ancient Sorceries - now this is a great story, with some wonderful atmosphere, and a mood of wistful longing and suppressed eroticism. It’s a tale of a man who finds himself compelled to get off his train in a small village France, and then finds that he can’t bring himself to leave. He meets a girl, who exercises a strange fascination over him. And he finds himself thinking of cats.
